Seasoned actor, Chief Femi Robinson, who used to appear in the popular television drama series, Village Headmaster, was just 20 when Nigeria gained independence from Britain on Oct. 1, 1960. Like many other youths of his time, he was excited and filled with the hope of a better and prosperous future.

On Independence Day, Robinson joined thousands of jubilant and enthusiastic young Nigerians at the Tafawa Balewa Square (known as the Race Course at the time) for a parade.

At an age when her peers were still clinging to their mother’s apron strings, Benedicta Okojie, aka Benita, was already performing before audiences comprising highly placed government officials. When her debut solo album, Child of God, was released in 1998, she was only 10.

With four successful albums produced by her dad (Ben King Okojie) and experience acquired from several music festivals, as well as a few local and international laurels to her credit, the young woman has indeed made her mark on the music scene.

At 24 and having graduated as an English major from the Redeemer’s University, Mowe, Benita has clearly come of age.

Saheed Balogun encounters robbers for the sixth time

Yoruba actor Saheed Balogun narrowly escaped a robbery attack on Monday along FUTA-Igbara Oke Road, Akure, Ondo state.

A CelebGist source, who was in a commercial bus moving side by side with Balogun’s white Hyundai Jeep, said that gunshots were suddenly fired by some armed men at the spot before every driver, including the Yourba actor, started derailing off the road for safety.

45 Boko Haram members surrender

The military Joint Task Force in Adamawa state said yesterday that no fewer than 45 suspected members of Boko Haram in Mubi town voluntarily handed over their weapons to the men of the JTF in the state.

The surrender, according to sources, might not be unconnected with the house-to-house search embarked upon by the security operatives in the town to flush out members of the Islamic sect following the imposition of a 24-hour curfew by the state government.
